This course aims to:
1. Provide an introduction to the basic concepts, importance, and structure of maritime transportation
2. Explore the various technologies that can provide cleaner, smarter, and more competitive maritime transportation
3. Analyze the importance of cost externalization and sustainability in maritime transportationUpon completing this course the students should be able to:
1. Understand the importance, components, and dynamics of maritime transportation
2. Analyze the various concepts and technologies that can assist the maritime industry towards greener shipping
3. Evaluate the various technologies under a total cost approach -
The course is separated in 3 main sections each corresponding to the objectives and fulfilling the learning outcomes.
Part I: Delivers in introduction to Maritime Transportation, discussing its importance, components, and dynamics
Part II: Discusses the negative environmental effects of the maritime industry. An introduction to the policies and several technologies available that potentially can lead to a greener shipping is also discussed.
Part III: Enables us to critically assess the available technologies considering the balance of all involved costs. It should be noted that it mainly acts as food for thought rather than a definitive solution.

The material is provided to provide you with some basic information and engage your critical thinking. In class we will have time to clarify your questions and assess your understanding.
